Hints and tips for perfect coffee preparation
Coffee “doesn’t taste right”
Individual taste experiences are influenced by many different factors, such as:
- the time of day.
- personal perception.
- other foods and beverages consumed shortly before.
- High-proof alcohol and strong spices have a particularly heavy impact on taste.
Coffee tastes “off”
Possible reasons:
- Expiry date has passed
- Damaged packaging
- Bad water quality (chlorine/phenols)
- Incorrect storage
What to do?
- Check expiry date, replace coffee if necessary
- Discard damaged packaging
- Use water filter
- Check storage conditions are correct
- Do not pre-prepare coffee grounds in filter papers as oxygen will mix with the coffee and immediately effects its quality
Coffee tastes “bad” first thing in the morning
Possible reasons:
- The water in the coffee system is stale
- The water in the pipes is stale
- Incorrect cleaning solutions have been used (possible residues)
- Insufficient rinsing after decalcification
What to do?
- Replace water in coffee systems when opening or flush through with fresh water
- Let tap water run for a while before adding to a coffee system
- Only use cleaning solution Tchibo recommended for your specific coffee system
- Talk to maintenance man, complain
- Rinse your coffee system thoroughly after any maintenance work has taken place
Coffee grind in cup
Possible reasons:
- Filter broken
- Filter mesh too coarse
- Filter improperly inserted
- Incorrect setting on coffee system
What to do?
- Replace filter
- Use a filter with a finer mesh
- Check filter is inserted correctly and adjust if necessary
- Consult the technical service at Tchibo
Coffee is “too strong”
Possible reasons:
- Incorrect brewing temperature
- Incorrect amount of coffee used
- Filter not working properly
- Grind too fine
What to do?
- Check brewing temperature is correct. Recommended at 92–95°C
- Check recommendations for amount of coffee to use to prepare your coffee drink
- Replace the filter if necessary
- Adjust the coarseness of the grind
